Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC) Fact Sheet
Catalyzing and Connecting College Student-Athletes Who Want to Change the World
What is Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC)? SALSC is a passionate group of college student-athlete leaders who want to use their leadership skills to make a real difference on a local, national, and international level.
What is Our Mission? Our mission is to catalyze and connect the power and passion of student-athlete leaders from 10 Leadership Academies across the country toward real, systemic, and sustainable social change. SALSC Schools: North Carolina, Illinois, Notre Dame, Yale, Pitt, Georgetown, Baylor, Michigan, Lehigh, Winston-Salem State
How Does SALSC Work? SALSC is a completely voluntary program for interested college student-athletes. SALSC members select and adopt a social change project for the school year. Members can choose to be a part of specific committees to collectively help plan the project, generate awareness, organize support, and enact the project. Much of the planning and preparation will take place during monthly meetings throughout the school year with the social change project typically being conducted over the summer months.
Why SALSC? Many student-athletes have a deep desire to be involved in local, national ,and international social change projects/organizations, yet rarely have the opportunity because of their demanding schedules. SALSC recognizes this fact and provides interested student-athletes with the support and flexibility to pursue their passions/interests while respecting their rigorous academic and athletic schedules.
SALSC's Purpose is three-fold:
1. Leadership Development - SALSC allows leaders to select, lead, and conduct a social change project. Participants develop valuable leadership skills through a process we call "Service Leading."
2. Career Preparation - SALSC participants gain real-world experience by serving on committees that are aligned with their career interests (marketing, finance, journalism, management, etc.)
3. Social Change - SALSC members address and alleviate important social issues (poverty, education, homelessness, healthcare, etc.) on a local, national, and/or international level.
